“What are you doing here at the Academy?”
Lawrence demanded from the doorway, his gaze
intense and the tension in him showing through
his taut neck muscles.
“Me! What am I doing here?” she stammered. “I
think I should be asking you the same thing.”
“I work here,” Lawrence flashed back, his eyes
flecked with gold and full of fire.
“I work here too!”
The lines in his brow furrowed. “Since when?”
His voice rising, as he stood up even taller, filling
the doorway with his strength.
“Since four hours ago when I arrived at this
school. And don’t you yell at me!” Cassianna
gulped for air, as she sputtered angrily, “I should
be yelling at you, you’re the one that ran off and left me.”
“I’m the one that ran off?” He clenched the muscles in his neck while sparks
flashed in his eyes.
“I waited for you and you never came back.” As Cassianna spoke the angry
words, she noticed his posture softened slightly, his shoulders easing, but his
muscular chest contracted with each heavy breath, betraying his mood.
He moved towards her in one quick stride.
He was inches from her. Cassianna could feel the heat between them. His heavy breathing was the only sound in the room. She inhaled the musky
scent of him, oh how she had loved that scent. She was melting with want, she
wanted to kiss those lips and feel his strong hands on her.
His eyes were locked on hers and he let out a deep breath, his voice lowered as
he leaned forward, grasping her hand in his.
“Cassie…,” his tone softened, his eyes soft as seawater as he looked at her.
Her hand trembled in his.
She looked up into his eyes.
He seemed lost for words as his face studied hers.
He leaned towards her and she couldn’t will her body to move even if she

Cassianna waited anxiously outside the hospital room as Lawrence went in to visit Tristan. She stood in the hallway again, going over his brother’s story again and again in her mind. She knew Tristan was going to tell his brother the truth about his mother’s accident and she prayed she was right and that Lawrence would understand. That he was the man she thought he was.
She paced the hallway and looked at her watch anxiously, only ten minutes had ticked by.
It seemed like an eternity. What if Tristan couldn’t go through with it? What if she was wrong and Lawrence got angry with Tristan and blamed him for his mother’s death?
Finally the door opened.
Lawrence poked his head out. He looked cool and calm as he had before he went into the room. She had half expected to see some sort of expression on his face. Maybe Tristan didn’t to tell him after all.
“Come on in Cassie,” Lawrence said motioning for her to join him. Nervously, she slipped her hand in his as she stepped inside the quiet room. She searched Tristan’s face for a clue. The furrow in his brow was eased and he looked relieved.
Lawrence looked at Tristan and then at Cassianna. Lawrence took a deep breath and looked at his brother and then, at her again. “Tristan told me all about the accident and dad covering for him.”
Cassianna froze, not knowing what was next. Her stomach fluttered nervously.
Lawrence cleared his throat. “I just wanted to say, in front of Tristan, how lucky I am that you followed me to Hawaii, and that somehow this brother of mine…” Lawrence’s voice began to crack as he looked at Tristan, “was able to tell you about the accident.” Lawrence’s eyes shimmered with unshed emotion as he continued. “Somehow you convinced him to tell me the truth.”
Cassianna’s eyes filled with tears.
“She’s very convincing,” Tristan said with a cheeky smile breaking the tension.
“Oh,” Cassianna gasped, then sighed, as tears if happiness slid down her cheeks.
Lawrence clasped Cassianna’s hand tightly in his. He cleared his throat and glanced at her before proceeding.
“What Dad and Tristan did is hard to understand… but I know Dad thought he was doing the right thing. You know, I’ve learned a lot this past month from you Cassianna. And I know what’s done is done. Nothing is going to bring Mom back.
What’s important is that we’re all here now, and that we’re a family.” He wrapped his protective arm around Cassianna, and pressed her to his chest, the heat of his breath on her hair as he quietly spoke his words into the top of her head. “And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, since you came back into my life, it’s too let go of the past, and to live in the present.”
The three of them stood on silence. Lawrence’s words hanging in the air as he clutched Cassie closer before easing his grasp.
Sighing and smiling, Lawrence’s tone lightened. “Now, Tristan, I have an important question for you.” His brow furrowed and then he smiled. “When are they letting you out of here?” he asked his kid brother.
“I think sometime at the end of the week. “Why?”
“Good.” Lawrence sounded pleased and then paused. “I want you to be my Best Man.”
Lawrence turned to Cassianna, and pulled something from his pocket as he sank down to the floor, perching on one knee.
“Cassianna Baxter, will you marry me?”
